His work on the book was prolonged because of his extensive volunteer and consulting activities from his retirement to 6 months before his death in Henry understood the need for a book that melded equally the genetics, physiology and cultural practices with postharvest handling of each fruit crop as an interrelated whole.

This second edition has been completely revised and new chapters added. It was decided to make this a general tropical fruit production textbook and only cover the major tropical crops in Volume 1. The other tropical fruits have been moved to Volume 2, which should appear next year. Subsequent chapters deal with the principal tropical fruit crops that are common in temperate city markets.

The information in each fruit chapter deals with taxonomy, varieties, propagation and orchard management, biotic and abiotic problems, variety development and postharvest handling.
